Included here will be a list of birds tha
t are either native to or simply found in California. This is on me so I’d better get to work.
White-Crowned Sparrow
Whiting Ranch
3/28/15
A brown sparrow with a gray breast and a black and white striped crown, it is year round resident of California. This bird is a ground feeder using both feet to scratch up seeds.
Mourning Dove
Backyard
3/26/15
A smooth, cream colored dove with a gray patch on the head. A coo, for which it’s named is it signature feature. Its wings create a whistling sound in flight. It feeds on the ground, bobbing its head while it walks.
Anna’s Hummingbird
Whiting Ranch
3/28/15
I wish the print could have turned out a little more clear to show the beauty of this little guy. He was perched for longer than any hummingbird I’ve seen.
Lesser Goldfinch
Whiting Ranch
3/28/15
Vivid, bright yellow breast was stunning in person.
Acorn Woodpecker
Whiting Ranch
3/28/15
Took this guy at a distance. Left image is one at work, right image one goofing off. Interesting to see the contrast from front to back.
American Crow
Whiting Ranch
3/28/15
Well this guy is everywhere. Had to get a shot of him before too long.
California Towhee
Whiting Ranch
3/28/15
I was lucky to get this shot. Twitchy and nervous, this one wouldn’t sit still for more than a couple of seconds. It was constantly diving into the brush at the slightest sound or movement.
Mallard
Back Bay, Newport Beach
3/29/15
Got the male and his female counterpart lounging on the side of the road. The male has such vivid colors he doesn’t even look real.
Great Egret
Back Bay, Newport Beach
3/29/15
Got a pic of this one just perched in the middle of the marsh. I realize this is about at the limit of my current zoom lens and will need a bigger one to take photos at this distance. Will look at some point to replace this picture but at least it is recorded.
Willet
Back Bay, Newport Beach
3/29/15
Again, would have like a better picture but snapped this at a distance.
Snowy Egret
Back Bay, Newport Beach
3/29/15
American Coot
Back Bay, Newport Beach
(Photo from Tewinkle Park)
3/29/15
Black Phoebe
Back Bay, Newport Beach
3/29/15
Looks a little different than the photos I’ve seen for this bird. Know they’re native to that area and am making a leap of faith.
Spice Finch
Back Bay, Newport Beach
3/29/15
This was also a challenge to identify. Did a lot of research and finally found it.
California Gull
Back Bay, Newport Beach
3/29/15
This one was making loops around the bay.
Allen’s Hummingbird
Back Bay, Newport Beach
3/29/15
Hummingbirds may be my favorite bird to photograph. I see them flitting around so much it’s a wonder for me to see them sitting still on a branch.
Song Sparrow
Back Bay, Newport Beach
3/29/15
Cinnamon Teal
Back Bay, Newport Beach
3/29/15
This is definitely a shot I’ll want to improve on. A beautiful bird that wouldn’t pose properly for the camera. Its silky rust coat reflected the sun in a majestic fashion.
Canada Goose
Woodbridge Lake
4/5/15
Certainly the largest birds I’ve photographed. They were docile and posed nicely for the camera.
House Sparrow
Woodbridge Lake
4/5/15
Think I’ve got this guy right. So many sparrow variations to choose from.
Snow Goose
Woodbridge Lake
4/5/15
Very plain and very beautiful.
Egyptian Goose
Woodbridge Lake
4/5/15
House Finch
Whiting Ranch
4/11/15
This is the male variety of the house finch, having a reddish throat and crown.

Lots of nice photographs here, Terry. The orange bishop was definitely a new one to me, and dramatic! What kind of camera gear are you using?
Enjoy the day and blessings in Jesus!

Jason-
I’m using a Nikon D3200 and have 2 zoom lenses. The one lens I use most is a 75-300

Hey Terry,
That’s some good equipment. Putting it to good and enjoyable use.
If you ever are looking for crazy zoom, ceck out the Nikon P900. It’s a superzoom with a range from 24mm to 3000mm. To do this the sensor is tiny, so detail and dynamic range suffer quite a bit. A few months ago I got one, and it’s generally what I take with, as changing out lenses became cumbersome and frustrating, and who couldn’t use more zoom? 🙂
