A brown sparrow with a gray breast and a black and white striped crown, it is year round resident of California. This bird is a ground feeder using both feet to scratch up seeds.

Mourning Dove

A smooth, cream colored dove with a gray patch on the head. A coo, for which it’s named is it signature feature. Its wings create a whistling sound in flight. It feeds on the ground, bobbing its head while it walks.

I was lucky to get this shot. Twitchy and nervous, this one wouldn’t sit still for more than a couple of seconds. It was constantly diving into the brush at the slightest sound or movement.

Got a pic of this one just perched in the middle of the marsh. I realize this is about at the limit of my current zoom lens and will need a bigger one to take photos at this distance. Will look at some point to replace this picture but at least it is recorded.
